Dr. David M. Eberhard

General Editor of Ethnologue

SIL International

David M. Eberhard is the General Editor of the Ethnologue. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He conducted field work among Amazonian communities in Brazil for 22 years before becoming a faculty member in the linguistic department at Payap University, Thailand, where he focused his teaching on non-linear phonology and sociolinguistics. His early work centred on the phonology and morphology of Mamaindê and other Nambikwara languages of Brazil, including the publication of a full-length grammar of Mamaindê. His recent research has shifted to sociolinguistics and more specifically to the broad topic of language use patterns among minority language communities around the globe. This has included topics such as the typology of minority language ecologies, language vitality, language shift, language development, languages and group identity, and minority languages and texting. He has helped develop several methodologies for community-based language development, including the Guide for Planning the Future of Our Language, which he co-authored, and the Language and Identity Journey, for which he was the original developer. He has offered workshops in community-based language development to local speakers of over 60 minority languages in 12 different countries. His publications highlight his passion for minoritized communities and their languages, a passion that continues to drive his life-long interest in understanding how minoritized communities use their language repertoires in creative ways to meet their social needs in todays globalized world. Dr. Eberhard’s work celebrates this creativity, and encourages the next generation of linguists and sociolinguists to do the same.
